Summer family social

Apologies for the long absence of news here on this blog! Besides the Women of Significance Summer Series we've been having a great summer with our families.

Okay, so this isn't a women's ministry function, but hey, there were women there! The Candid Couples class sponsored a family party - about 60 of us gathered for a pot-luck complete with grilled burgers, dogs and chicken kabobs (for the men's version of this party, visit Men of Legacy).

Here are Denise, Staci (our gracious hostess!) and Mary checking out the food in the kitchen (Say hi to Susan - she didn't think she was in the picture):

Meanwhile, outside the kids swam while Mr. Brad aided the girls' side in the squirt-gun fight.And the rest of the 30 or so kids practiced their cannon-balls.

Several teens returned from their mission trip in San Antonio. Here they are before Mr. Wally said, "The number is FOUR on the trampoline!!"

The evening was cool and remarkably mosquito-less (here are Jolie, Staci, Pastor Mark, and Andrew (that's Chris with his back to the camera):

Thanks, Wally and Staci, for hosting!

Lives of integrity

Is your heart's desire to live a life firmly resolved to serve God wholeheartedly and to resist the world's pressure?

It is mine, too.

I had no idea what to expect when I signed up for Beth Moore's Daniel Study.

All I can say is: Oh. My. Gracious!

You need to be here!

The whole first portion of the study talks about living a life of integrity, like Daniel and his friends, Shadrach, Meshak, and Abednego.

I'll just tease you with a few of Beth's one-liners:
  • We are called to be "culturally relevant but not spiritually irrelevant" in the "Babylon" of our culture.
  • We're never more tempted to be rude than when we think someone deserves it.
  • Backbiting is just as habit-forming as back-and-forth biting.
  • Is "putting our best foot" forward just another way of image building?
  • Loyalty is something we already were that surfaces in the test.
Each turn of the page challenges me to sharpen the convictions that shape who I am and my faith in God. It makes me realize again, if I have anything or can do anything, it's all because of Him. I want to live my life to Him glory, and say with Daniel:
Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
wisdom and power are his.

He changes times and seasons;
he sets up kings and deposes them.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.

He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
and light dwells with him.

I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king.

Daniel 2:20-23
Join us Tuesday mornings at 9:30 or Wednesday nights at 7:00 in Room 210.

It's not too late! For those who have missed the first sessions, there will be a makeup session this Wednesday, March 21 at 5:40 p.m. in Room 210. Bring your own dinner or grab your dinner downstairs, and we'll start with the first DVD.

This Sunday is deadline for Mexico City missions trip

Dear Hillcrest Family,

I trust that you are having a great day in the Lord. I am so thankful for His presence in our church and for the opportunities that He affords us to reach people. This week we are making a final appeal for those interested in participating in the upcoming missions trip to Mexico City.

We are partnering with Operation Serve www.operationserve.org which has a ministry to those living in the garbage dumps of Mexico City. If you have never been on a missions trip, or would like to participate in a life-changing experience, this is the trip for you. I have personally taken nine missions teams to Mexico City with Operation Serve, and each one has transformed my life.

The following are some highlights of what to expect:

1. We fly out from DFW on Saturday, June 23rd .

2. When we arrive, we get settled in and have a time of team orientation. We are staying at the San Francisco hotel located in the heart of Mexico City.

3. Each day we get up early in the morning, have a buffet breakfast and meet for devotions prior to heading out for ministry.

4. A bus picks us up at the hotel each day and we head out to either one of the garbage dumps situated outside city limits or we partner with a local church.

5. Once at the site we break up into teams where we assist in various ministries: they include hair cutting, assisting local doctors, optical care, and children’s ministry.

6. We return late evening to the hotel where we stay at rooms that are quite comfortable.

7. We return home on Saturday June 30th .

The total cost is $1250 which includes everything (airfare, lodging, meals) except for what you would spend for souvenirs and personal items.

It is not necessary for you to be skilled in any of the above ministries. Operation Serve offers the training that is needed to assist for that week. There is however a special need for those skilled in cutting hair. If you can assist in this area, it would be a great blessing. We will be one of several teams that ministers that week. This allows us the opportunity to fellowship with other church groups from around the country. If you are interested and have not signed up yet, you can do so by filling out an application located in the kiosk after this Sunday morning’s service, March 18th. I will personally be there to answer any additional questions you may have.

Together For His Service,

Pastor Alvin Miranda

Senior Associate Pastor / Worship Pastor
