Summer family social

Apologies for the long absence of news here on this blog! Besides the Women of Significance Summer Series we've been having a great summer with our families.

Okay, so this isn't a women's ministry function, but hey, there were women there! The Candid Couples class sponsored a family party - about 60 of us gathered for a pot-luck complete with grilled burgers, dogs and chicken kabobs (for the men's version of this party, visit Men of Legacy).

Here are Denise, Staci (our gracious hostess!) and Mary checking out the food in the kitchen (Say hi to Susan - she didn't think she was in the picture):

Meanwhile, outside the kids swam while Mr. Brad aided the girls' side in the squirt-gun fight. And the rest of the 30 or so kids practiced their cannon-balls.

Several teens returned from their mission trip in San Antonio. Here they are before Mr. Wally said, "The number is FOUR on the trampoline!!"

The evening was cool and remarkably mosquito-less (here are Jolie, Staci, Pastor Mark, and Andrew (that's Chris with his back to the camera):

Thanks, Wally and Staci, for hosting!

Lives of integrity

Is your heart's desire to live a life firmly resolved to serve God wholeheartedly and to resist the world's pressure?

It is mine, too.

I had no idea what to expect when I signed up for Beth Moore's Daniel Study.

All I can say is: Oh. My. Gracious!

You need to be here!

The whole first portion of the study talks about living a life of integrity, like Daniel and his friends, Shadrach, Meshak, and Abednego.

I'll just tease you with a few of Beth's one-liners:
  • We are called to be "culturally relevant but not spiritually irrelevant" in the "Babylon" of our culture.
  • We're never more tempted to be rude than when we think someone deserves it.
  • Backbiting is just as habit-forming as back-and-forth biting.
  • Is "putting our best foot" forward just another way of image building?
  • Loyalty is something we already were that surfaces in the test.
Each turn of the page challenges me to sharpen the convictions that shape who I am and my faith in God. It makes me realize again, if I have anything or can do anything, it's all because of Him. I want to live my life to Him glory, and say with Daniel:
Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
wisdom and power are his.

He changes times and seasons;
he sets up kings and deposes them.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.

He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
and light dwells with him.

I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king.

Daniel 2:20-23
Join us Tuesday mornings at 9:30 or Wednesday nights at 7:00 in Room 210.

It's not too late! For those who have missed the first sessions, there will be a makeup session this Wednesday, March 21 at 5:40 p.m. in Room 210. Bring your own dinner or grab your dinner downstairs, and we'll start with the first DVD.

This Sunday is deadline for Mexico City missions trip

Dear Hillcrest Family,

I trust that you are having a great day in the Lord. I am so thankful for His presence in our church and for the opportunities that He affords us to reach people. This week we are making a final appeal for those interested in participating in the upcoming missions trip to Mexico City.

We are partnering with Operation Serve www.operationserve.org which has a ministry to those living in the garbage dumps of Mexico City. If you have never been on a missions trip, or would like to participate in a life-changing experience, this is the trip for you. I have personally taken nine missions teams to Mexico City with Operation Serve, and each one has transformed my life.

The following are some highlights of what to expect:

1. We fly out from DFW on Saturday, June 23rd .

2. When we arrive, we get settled in and have a time of team orientation. We are staying at the San Francisco hotel located in the heart of Mexico City.

3. Each day we get up early in the morning, have a buffet breakfast and meet for devotions prior to heading out for ministry.

4. A bus picks us up at the hotel each day and we head out to either one of the garbage dumps situated outside city limits or we partner with a local church.

5. Once at the site we break up into teams where we assist in various ministries: they include hair cutting, assisting local doctors, optical care, and children’s ministry.

6. We return late evening to the hotel where we stay at rooms that are quite comfortable.

7. We return home on Saturday June 30th .

The total cost is $1250 which includes everything (airfare, lodging, meals) except for what you would spend for souvenirs and personal items.

It is not necessary for you to be skilled in any of the above ministries. Operation Serve offers the training that is needed to assist for that week. There is however a special need for those skilled in cutting hair. If you can assist in this area, it would be a great blessing. We will be one of several teams that ministers that week. This allows us the opportunity to fellowship with other church groups from around the country. If you are interested and have not signed up yet, you can do so by filling out an application located in the kiosk after this Sunday morning’s service, March 18th. I will personally be there to answer any additional questions you may have.

Together For His Service,

Pastor Alvin Miranda

Senior Associate Pastor / Worship Pastor

Beth Moore simulcast - Last day to buy tickets February 18

Wow!

We are getting close to a capacity crowd for the Beth Moore simulcast on February 24!

If you haven´t bought your ticket, tomorrow (Sunday) will be the last day to purchase one at church. You can still purchase by phone (972 392-3992) through February 20 if there are any seats left. We can comfortably seat 200 in the Seminar Room, and up to 300 if we squeeze in tight!

If you would like to volunteer for this event, we need you! This is a great way to get to know other Hillcrest Women and to reach out to our community. We need:

1. Pray-ers - Please pray for lives to be touched on Saturday. We have a group that will pray before, during, and after the altar call.
2. Givers - We need people who can donate a few items:
- Gift cards and gift items for door prizes
- Lotions and flower arrangements to decorate the bathrooms the day of the event
- Scholarship funds for those in need
3. Bakers - We need several people to bake 3 dozen cookies, brownies, or donate snack mix or fruit.
4. Photographers - If you can bring your camera, please do! Let's share those photos!

Wednesday 2/21 6:00-8:30 p.m.:
  • Program stuffers - We need several people to put programs and flyers into pocket folders. Meet in the Performing Arts Center.
  • Bakers - Bring baked goods to the Performing Arts Center. We'll freeze the baked goods to be served during Saturday's afternoon break.
Friday 2/23 - 12:00 noon:

Bathroom Decorating
- Make our lovely bathrooms (even a men's room!) worthy of 200 female visitors.
Table Setup - Put on tablecloths and flower arrangements (arrangements will already be made).
Registration Setup - Organize registration area.

Saturday 2/24 (day of simulcast)
We still need a few more hostesses, lunch and snack helpers, and tear-down helpers. These jobs should not interfere with attending the seminar.

Please let me know how you would like to help!

It deals in-depth with the historical details, predictions, and fulfillments detailing history from the time of Daniel, through the inter-biblical period, the time of Christ, and on to the second coming of Christ.

What is women's ministry?

I've been doing an informal survey of my friends and neighbors - ladies of all ages and from all walks of life.

Here's what I've been asking:
What would YOUR "ideal" women's ministry include (for you, in the stage of life you are in right now)?
I've gotten lots of answers. Everything from young moms' groups, to deep Bible studies, to mentoring programs, to ladies' nights out.

While programs are good (and we have several in the works right now, including the Beth Moore simulcast, an upcoming Beth Moore study, and other fellowship events), virtually everyone I spoke with could boil their ministry "ideal" down to one thing.

Relationship
.

First with our Savior, and then with our family in Christ.

We need to feel connected. We need each other.

Especially when I was a young mom, I spent lots of lonely years in church. Many of them wishing someone - not some program or "ministry" - would call me, talk to me, or just express interest in me in some way. It didn't dawn on me until much later that, the truth is, I feel most connected - to my family, to my friends, and to my church family - when I’m the one thinking of others. When I set my agenda aside for a while and do something inconvenient for me but a blessing for someone else.

This kind of ministry does not require a leader telling folks when to show up, or what to read and when. In fact, ministry is not only for those with a title or a paid staff position. It's not only for those who have the Bible memorized or who can say a deep-sounding prayer.

It's for those who have a heart for serving.

When I take a few minutes to make a phone call, give a hug, or offer an invitation to sit together - and of course, anytime there’s food involved - these all have a way of bringing me out of myself. I'm thinking of serving someone else. It's ministry.

Have you thought of a way you can reach out to someone else today?
I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.
Mark 9:41, NIV
